The newly elected Chairman of Udu Timber Union, Pastor Edward Sagba, has paid a courtesy call on the Lucky Abalara-led executive of the union in Uvwie, Enerhen unit.

Receiving the visitors in her office recently, Abalara, joined by some members of her executive, urged them to remain good neighbours, adding that the union in the area through their support will be taken to greater heights.

According to her, wood sellers hold a sensitive position in the industry, promising to with their support amend some laws that will make the business more favourable.

On his part, Sagba disclosed that he was amazed with the warm reception of his host, stressing that competition between the two branches of the union must be avoided, but rather sued that they work together.

He continued: “Udu Timber yard, is the highest employer of labour in the local government,” saying that in a short while, they plan to get involved with wood export and generate foreign exchange for the local government and the state.

He bemoaned the poor power supply in the area and said that they are on a move to restore steady power supply to the area.

“Feel free to call on us in any area you need our cooperation,” he added.

On the issue of price control, he hoped that machinery will be put in place to bring about this.

Speaking also, the Treasurer of Uvwie Timber union, Enerhen Unit, Juliet Odili, stressed that some standards have to be put in place, noting that it is hard to find wood to fell because those involved in these are not controlled and thus called on some regulatory policies to be put in place.

The two sister unions agreed to meet at a later date to brainstorm on ways to move the timber business forward in the area, while they called on the State Government to consider granting loans to them to ease the financial burden on them.
