Herdsmen Killings: We Will Resort To Self-help, Says DTHA Member

The lawmaker representing Ethiope East Constituency in Delta State House of Assembly, Chief (Hon.) Evance Ivwurie, has said that his constituents will henceforth resort to self-help in dealing with the issue of herdsmen killings in the area.
Chief Ivwurie who expressed anger at the murder of Mr. Happy Akpomieme, a 56-year-old farmer from Urhuoka Abraka, and father of 11 children, who was riddled with bullets from Fulani herdsmen yesterday, added that they will defend themselves henceforth from the criminals masquerading as herdsmen.
He said: “Today is one of the saddest days for us in Ethiope East and Delta State, and I am personally fed up with this Fulani Herdsmen politics our president and some political elects of the country who are behind this killing are playing, and have failed to take solid measures to stop the killings. They must know that we have decided to resort to self-help.”
According to him, “two days ago on the 19th of February 2018, three Fulani herdsmen accosted Mrs. Patricia Okpako on her way to her farm in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State and attempted to rape her. All her appeal that she is going through severe menstrual pain fell on deaf ears until she used her blood-soaked pad to rub the face of one of the rapist and managed to escape with some injuries.”
He recounted how Akpomiemie went to their casava farm yesterday with his wife and 16 year old son, Elvis Akpomieme, saying that while they peeled the cassava they harvested, they saw cows and herdsmen heading close to them and became apprehensive.
According to Hon. Evance, Akpomieme immediately told his wife and son to escape after they were accosted by the gun wielding herdsmen.
“As the wife and son took to their heels,  the mother was shot and three other gunshots fired at Mr. Akpomiemie ,” he added.

Elvis is said to have escaped lying in the bush from 4pm till 10pm and then managed to get the news to the town. The mother also escaped with severe gun injuries on her thigh and other parts of her body.
She was referred by the Government Hospital, Abraka to the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara where she is now battling for her life.
Today, a team of security operatives, joined by the lawmaker and others stormed the bush and have since discovered the corpse of Mr. Akpomieimie.
He said further, “Fulani herdsmen have killed 12 people in 30 months and the people of Ethiope East have said enough is enough. Henceforth, we are resorting to self-help.”
