Aniagwu: Okowa’s ‘Prosperity To All Deltans’ Agenda Is On Course

“Prosperity for all Deltans by the Okowa administration is on course and is not equivalent to money distribution to Deltans on the streets, but is a way of putting facilities that are available to Deltans so that as they enjoy these facilities, they can become prosperous in their own way.”
This was a part of the address presented to publishers in the state when the Chief Press Secretary to the Delta State Governor, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, visited the Delta State chapter of Association of Community Newspapers Publishers of Nigeria, ACNPN, in Asaba recently.
Speaking about several SMART projects in the state, Aniagwu hinted that the administration is engaged in projects to address the issue of flood in the state capital.
He said: “I want to believe that a number of you have had cause to see the storm drainage which the state government embarked on and is being handled by a reputable company. I do not need to bore you with the details of it because I am aware you all know how deep and how profound that effort is and how far we have gone in that regard.
“Beyond that, we have also increased the number of roads that we have to construct in the state capital. You will recall that sometime last year we told you that whenever the financial situation improves we would let you know and I can report that as from September last year our revenue has now begun to look in the direction of the north pole as against the southern pole that it rested on within a period of 16 months.
“That being the case, it means that the number of infrastructure and other processes would be enhanced and that is the reason why you are seeing the number of jobs going on across the length and breadth of the 25 local governments that make up the state.
“For those who have had the privilege of travelling with us across these areas you would have seen that there is an upsurge in terms of activities either in road construction, rehabilitation of schools and or of course our efforts in addressing the challenges of the environment. The reason why we are able to do that and scale it up is because our revenue is looking in the direction of the north pole or moving in a much more appreciable direction than what it was in 2016 and in the better part of 2017.
“Also, there is improved security and peace particularly in the creeks. This is as a result of the engagements that the government has had with our brothers and sisters in the oil bearing communities.”
Aniagwu while appreciating those in the creeks for embracing peace, said that the Okowa-led administration is poised to ameliorating the several neglects they have suffered over the years, saying that the Delta State government has been able to construct a number of roads even in the deep creeks of the Niger Delta.
“This government is not about the state capital, neither is it about the urban areas. We are also looking forward to ensuring that our brothers and sisters who live in oil bearing communities enjoy the very wonderful fruit that God has planted beneath the soil of this wonderful state of ours,” he said.
He said further: “In addition to this, we are also ensuring that sports is given a facelift. We have introduced the principal’s cup where you have different schools competing and at the end of the day you see a lot of enthusiasm which means you learn while you play game. They develop the mind and at the same time they develop their physical strength.
“But most importantly, Asaba stadium which is now christened Stephen Keshi International Stadium which for a very long time was neglected, will be in the best of shape before the end of June and you will be proud of what you would see. Prior to the commencement of work in the stadium, we first of all ensured that the roads we have around that environment is also given a facelift, just the same way there is an upscale of the construction of roads across the length and breadth of the capital territory.
“Note that the capital territory extends to Ibusa, Okpanam and many other communities around. I am talking about the construction going on in Azagba and a number of all those other areas.
“Let me also report to you that with a deep sense of gladness that we have also upscale the amount of work going on at the airport. Today, the airport is closed down to enable us conclude the remaining part of the upgrade of the runway. We were lucky to have the contactor that was working on that particular project before now to exit willingly; and that exit made it possible for us to now bring in a much more competent contactor that is not only moving with the desired speed but ensuring that what we have on ground is what is befitting. We can tell you that in less than two months that airport will be opened. Not only just opened, but you will have the series of Boeing class of aircraft land there. That now means that more flight will come in either from Lagos, from Abuja or perhaps any other place within the country that individuals will possibly commute from to get to Asaba.
Speaking about Governor Okowa’s plans for Warri, he noted that Warri being “the commercial nerve centre and the pride of Delta’s economic strength,” that a number of projects are ongoing, either in terms of roads, urban renewal or in bringing back parks and recreational facilities that will make it easy for people to once in a while relax after the day’s work.
