A 22-year-old man, Federal Nwachukwu has been reported dead after an acid bath, as rival cult groups clashed and set about five buildings ablazed at Sandfield Road in Warri, Delta State.
The rival cult groups also attacked and injured many people with dangerous weapons.
It was learnt that the deceased who is a native of Aghoro and Egragbene Communities in Bayelsa and Delta States died at an undisclosed hospital two days ago in Warri.
There is serious tension in the area over the death of the deceased who is a suspected member of a new cult group, Ijaw Boys Cult, IJB.
The latest clash is between the Vikings and the Ijaw Boys Cult, IJB a new group with members in Delta and Bayelsa states.
It was learnt that the deceased was sleeping in the home of his parents when members of the IJB gave him the acid bath and afterwards shot sporadically in the area.
We gathered that that trouble started after a 75 litre of Petrol (PMS) stored in a container was declared missing by a vigilance group on night duty recently.
In the process, a member of the vigilance group was allegedly fingered, as he was said to have absconded from his duty post with the missing 75 litres of petrol belonging to a local boat engine owner.
The suspect who is alleged to be a member of Vikings Confraternity was subjected to serious physical torture.
The suspect who was said to have been terrorizing the locality in a revenge mission, invited his cult members and launched attacks on members of the vigilance group for beating him.
It was later learnt that some members of the vigilance group are also members of IJB (Ijaw Boys cult confraternity) a newly established cult gang in Bayelsa and Delta as well as other Ijaw speaking communities in Niger Delta.
Members of the IJB are said to be very brutal because some of them are mainly ex-militants and sea-pirates.
A Senior Police Officer with “A” Division in Warri who craved anonymity said the police in the area are handling the security situation, stressing that it is under control.
The police officer urged residents to remain calm, noting that the police are after the suspected cult gang leaders and members of the said cult groups..
