Shun Cultism, Drug Abuse, Other Social Vices, CDHR Urges Students

Following the rate of cultism, armed robbery, drug abuse and other social vices prevalent among primary and secondary pupils/students across the state, the Coordinator, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Udu Chapter in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, Comrade (Amb.) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, has charged pupils/students to shun cultism, drugs abuse, armed robbery and other social vices as these are capable of jeopardizing their life.

Comrade (Amb) Agberen stated this recently when the body visited three schools namely, Okpioyovwi Primary School,Ugbisi Primary School and Egini Grammar.School all in Udu Local Government Area.

Comrade (Amb) Agberen said the social vices such as cultism armed robbery, drug abuse, examination malpractice, among others can jeopardize their future.

He said: “Cultism, drugs abuse, armed robbery and other social vices can jeopardize your life as a student. I urge you to stay away from them.”

He said this advice becomes necessary as lots of youths in Udu are now involved in these socal vices, saying the earlier they stop them, the better for them.

Comrade (Amb.) Agberen used the medium to commend the Delta State Commissioner for Basic Education, Hon. Patrick Ukah for his tremendous transformations of schools in terms of development iin Udu Local Government Area just as he commended the Delta State Goverment led by Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa for his building and rehabilitation of schools infrastructure and provision of equipment and facilities in the school.

He however said more needed.to be done in Udu Local Government area in this regard to make the students feel the impact of his administration.

Adding: “Although the government has tried in transforming the schools in terms of infrastructure, more rooms are needed for improvement in this regard.”

Furthermore, he said education is the bed rock of children’s future therefore the state. goverment should do more in this regard, adding there is need to build the education foundation of the pulpils/students to make them achieve their goals in life.

The group used the opportunity to appeal the the state goverment to pay primary school teachers salary up to date to encourage them to put in their best in the discharge of thier. duties.

On his part, the Vice President of CDHR and member of Udu Chapter of the great body, Comrade Prince Kehinde Taiga also joined his voice to charge the state government to be up and doing in ensuring that education is developed to standard in the state.

According to him, “the education of our children is a thing of top priority in the state and I appeal to the state government led by our able Governor, Dr Senator Ifeanyi Okowa to do well in this regard.”

He also called on the state government to meet the needs of teachers in terms of salary just as he decried lack of teachers and teaching and learning facilities in most of the schools across the state.

The highlight of the visit was the distribution of note-books and other educational materials to the pupuls/students amidst jubilation.
