Secondary Education Proposes ₦12.7 Billion For 2022 Budget In Delta

In order for Delta State Government to expand infrastructure in public secondary schools and reduce the spate of abandoned projects, the Secondary Education arm of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary has proposed budget sum of twelve billion seven hundred million naira (₦ 12,700,000,000) for 2022.

Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu stated this in Asaba when she appeared before the House committee on Education to defend the 2022 budget estimates.

Ezewu said that the money would be used to facilitate the completion of ongoing projects, facilitate the provision of science and other instructional materials in public schools as well as intervene in securing school lands with a view to creating conducive learning environment among other needs.

According to the commissioner, the desire of the State Governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa administration to sustain the growth in the education sector led to the creation of the secondary education arm of the ministry.

Ezewu said that the sum of ₦ 1,116,852,274.84 had been proposed for the entire Ministry in 2022 budget as current estimates, adding that the proposal for the registration and renewal of private school licences for 2022 budget was ₦ 160,000,000.

Similarly, the primary Education arm of the ministry had proposed capital budget sum of six billion two hundred million naira in her 2022 budget.

Defending the budget in Asaba before the committee on education, Commissioner for Primary Education, Mr. Chika Ossai said that proposed revenue for 2022 was ₦ 196, 200,000.

Ossai,  noted that efforts had been made by the state government to enforce regulation that would require the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to generate revenue from the use of school premises.

The commissioner, who recalled that the approved budget of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for 2021 was twelve billion seven hundred and forty four million three hundred and seventy seven naira, added that the outstanding commitments to the primary Education arm  from 2015 to September 2021 was ₦ 5,959,239,590.59.
