CDHR To Partner BEDC To Improve Electricity Supply To Deltans

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights ( CDHR), Delta State branch is to partner with the management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) in the state to improve on electricity supply to Deltans in particular and the nation at large.

This was the outcome of the meeting held over the weekend between CDHR Executive, Delta State branch and the authority of BEDC Delta State in later’s office, by Warri Sapele Road in Warri South Local Government Area, Delta.

Speaking in the meeting, the CDHR Delta State branch Chairman, Comrade Jonathan Giama lamented the suffering of Deltans occasioned by inability of the management of BEDC to supply regular power to Deltans in particular and the nation.

He said the act of BEDC to give the people power epileptically, the failure of BEDC authority to replace electric cables and wire, taxing consumers to pay for the replacement of transformers among others is an infringment on the fundamental rights of the citizens.

He added: “it is the duty of BEDC authority to serve the people well since they are paying for it and the failure of BEDC to give consumers regular power supply is an infringment on their fundamental human rights”.

He said the BEDC authority should organise town hall meetings to enlighten the different communities what is responble for epileptic power supply to the consumers just as he said if they fail to do it, they have no choice but embark on state wide protest.

He also called on the federal government to do the needful to enable BEDC serve Nigerians better.

He however said CDHR is ready to partner with BEDC authority to ensure the people’ rights are not trampled upon just as he said BEDC is protected, saying with that, both parties would enjoy each other.

On his part, the National President of CDHR nationwide, Comrade (Dr) Prince Kehinde Taiga said the body is ready to work with BEDC if they are ready to improve on the power supply to Deltans, just as he charged power consumers to play their part by paying their bills regularly to enable BEDC serve Deltans in particular and Nigerians well.

He said the consumers should not wait until BEDC disconnects them before they pay their bills.

According to him, “so long the BEDC tries to do their bidding, the consumers should also do their own so that the right of each other would not be infringed upon.”

Comrade (Dr) Taiga who said the meeting was a successful one, said BEDC should try to satisfy their consumers for their customers to appreciate them.

In his response, the Delta State Chief Head of BEDC, Comrade Engineer Felix Obishai said there are lots of challenges being faced by BEDC in the power distribution and service providing.

He however said the organization is ready to improve on its services, saying, for CDHR to embark on protest is not the answer but synergising with them to ensure that consumers are enlightened to enable them pay their bills regularly.

“There are lots of challenges faced by BEDC which affect effective service delivery but the authority is finding a way to end these challenges and give our esteemed customers good services”.

Present in the meeting were the different BEDC business managers, members.of CDHR across the state, among others.
