Government Is Putting Up Measures That Will Fast Track The Administration Of Criminal Justice System Laws —Bozimo

The Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Delta State, Isaiah Bozimo Esq, has assured Deltans that Government is putting up measures to fast track the administration of criminal justice system laws in the state.

Bozimo who fielded questions from journalists at the premises of the OKERE-WARRI correctional centre on the ocassion of the ongoing prison visit by the Delta State Chief Judge, said they at the temple of justice, having identified some lapses in the system that have poised impediments and delay in the system, they have now resolved to deal with the situation head long.

He told journalists that there were many impediments to the delay in the machinery of justice which could be ether of the correctional centres itself, the Ministry of Justice and the complaints themselves.

Bozimo stressed that “if there is a problem in any of these wheel, then the machinery will not move forward freely. For instance, you may have a situation where the correctional service is unable to take an inmate to court on an adjournment date, what will happen is that the case will not proceed as originally scheduled ”

“On the other hand, if you have a situation where the ministry of justice is supposed to render an advise within a stipulated time, and we did not do that, likewise the case cannot proceed, “he pointed out.

The Honourable Attorney-General revealed that they have identified that there are problems in the administration of criminal justice system laws and they are at the moment trying very hard to proffer solutions to these perceived problems.

“The Ministry of Justice is proposing to take wide scale review on the administration of criminal justice law, and we are also in conversation with the judges of the criminal Bench, My Lordship, the Chief Judge of Delta State, the respective Chairmen of the Nigerian Bar Association, with a view to identify what the problems are, and to proffer solutions.”

“We are hopeful that these discussions will yield very useful and very innovative provisions that will fast track and speed up the administration of criminal justice. Our hope is that once we implement these provisions, we will see less and less of cases that are dragging on without meaningful progress, “he added.

He also explained to journalists that the prison visit was primarily on inmates who were incarcerated but have no basis to be in the correctional centres and likewise anybody who have been incarcerated for longer than they were made to serve after they were convicted.

Bozimo said that as the court proceedings were going on, if the state Director of Public Prosecution, issued any legal advice that an inmate has no case to answer, they were immediately released.
