30th Anniversary: DELSU Now Has 12 Faculties, 83 Departments, Has Trained About 100, 000 Men, Women –VC

Vice-Chancellor, Delta State University, Abraka, Professor Andy Egwunyenga, has said that the institution has grown from a one faculty university in 1992 to one of 12 faculties and 83 departments, saying that they “have every course to be joyful after the past 30 years.”

Prof. Egwunyenga, who spoke on Sunday during the 30th Anniversary Interdenominational Church Service at St. Paul Catholic Church, Site II, Abraka, said that DELSU has also grown from 21, 000 students to as much as 30, 000 students, adding that the institution has trained almost 100,000 young men and women who are involved in the development of Nigeria.

The VC who led the University community in Holy Mass and Thanksgiving to mark the commencement of the week-long Convocation and 30th Anniversary Celebrations, continued: “We have cause to celebrate not just because of these, but because many of us who take this institution as essential have taken the success story of DELSU as our own success story. Many of us joined this institution when we were in our mid twenties and early thirties but look at us today in our mid 50s and 60s with children, wives and husbands; it’s wonderful.

“When we started DELSU it was too difficult; lecturers became farmers. Abraka was just a small town and almost everywhere was a jungle but look at Abraka today, so open. I think this University has opened doors for this community by bringing in a lot of people from different parts of the country and we will agree that we have a lot to celebrate.”

Speaking further, he said: “We celebrate knowledge, character, service and excellence because we have also moved from the position of 17th to the 14th position of best universities in the Federal Republic of Nigeria and I think that it is only possible because of the collective hardwork of a lot of people working side by side and that is why it is important for us to celebrate this success so that we can encourage ourselves to work more.”
