The English media and people are known for creating a ‘larger than life’ image of everything that has to do with them, this pride they have rubbed not just on the faces of Africans, Asians, South Americans and the likes, but on fellow Britons.

Little wonder some Scottish, Welsh and Irishmen were rooting for “La Roja” the Spanish football team in the just concluded finals of Euro 2024 which held on Sunday 14th July, 2024 in Berlin – Germany.

The English consider their Football league – the English Premier League (EPL) the best in the world to the disdain of other well to do football leagues like the Spanish La Liga, the German Bundesliga , The Italian Siera A, the Dutch Eredivisie and even the comedic Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).

They consider their pundits the best of the best, their football players raw talents, their football stadium state-of-the art, their spellings the best, their accent impeccable, their culture stellar.

In their eyes England – the tiny little land they call home, has been caressed by Midas, the mythical King of Phrygia in Asia Minor, blessed by the Greek god – Dionysus with an extraordinary ability to change anything he touched into Gold.

It is not surprising that the Manchester United Legend? – Gary Neville whose career at the club spanned 19 years (1992 – 2011) recording just 5 goals and 7 assists in the league, he later went on to coach the Spanish Club Valencia CF briefly after retirement and was excused for recording 11 loses in 38 games, with his team scoring 39 goals and conceding 38 along the line picked on Marc Cucurella, the Chelsea defender who plays left full back for Spain, a relatively younger colleague who started his footballing career with Barcelona B in Spanish Segunda Division B in 2016 but has 7 goals and 10 assists at club level to his name – Let’s Ponder!

Gary Neville either out of hate for Chelsea players or being the bigmouthed and off point pundit that he has become recently, made a damning statement about the Spanish team in general and Cucurella in particular, in his words Gary Neville said “I think he [Cucurella] is one of the reasons I think Spain probably can’t go all the way” what a damning statement to come from a former player, coach and now pundit.

The Irony is the same Gary Neville was blind as a bat to the very woes of the Three Lions, a team which places the best players on the bench and field players based on the position of their clubs in the foregone season.

The now sacked Gareth Southgate’s England may have made it to the final of Euros 2024, as he did during the last Euros, but it is on record that even the Croatian Football team with relatively modest players out performs those who claim to have come from the home of football – England, their xG (Expected Goals – a measure of the quality of a chance by calculating the likelihood it will be scored from a particular position on the pitch during a particular phase of play)ratio at the Euros was 6.43 while that of Croatia who went out of the tourney at the group stage was 7.10.

Fate has one again tutored Gary Neville on humility, England is the first team to lose back to back final at the Euros, as they lost Euro 2020 to Italy on Penalties and they called for the heads of the three blackmen Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho all missed their penalty kicks in a final the English team lost in Wembley – London.

His critism spurred Marc Cucurella into putting in his best performance in recent years, he ended up humbling Neville’s England with a clinical assist to send the trophy to the Iberian peninsula and not the so-called home of football.

Why Neville licks his wounded ego he can as well listen to Cucurella’s new music dedicated to him…
Cucu, Cucurella

Cucu, Cucurella
