Rena Wakama Crowned Top Coach At Paris 2024 Olympics
Rena Wakama, head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been honored as the best female basketball coach at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced her recognition through their official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday.
Wakama, who made history as the first Nigerian woman to coach a national basketball team, led D’Tigress to an impressive quarter-final berth at the Olympics. This milestone marks the first time any African team, male or female, has reached this stage of the competition. Despite a challenging 74-88 defeat to Team USA in the quarter-finals, Wakama’s tactical acumen and leadership earned widespread praise from FIBA officials.

Initially, her appointment in June 2023 was met with skepticism due to her limited international coaching experience. However, at just 32 years old, Wakama exceeded all expectations, breaking new ground for Nigerian and African basketball. The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) supported her appointment, emphasizing her experience as a former D’Tigress player as a vital asset.
Wakama’s journey, which began amid doubts, has now culminated in this prestigious award. Her leadership during the Olympics has not only highlighted her coaching talents but also placed Nigerian basketball firmly in the global spotlight.
This accolade comes after a series of challenges and successes for Wakama, solidifying her as a key figure in the sport. Her achievements have been celebrated by fans and officials alike, reinforcing her role in advancing Nigerian basketball and inspiring future generations.
