18th Convocation: DELSU Holds Pre-Convocation Thanksgiving Service, As VC Appreciates God For University’s Growth

Vice Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, has expressed appreciation to God for the growth and development the University has witnessed in recent times.

Professor Asagba made the remark at the University’s 18th Convocation Pre-Convocation Thanksgiving Service which held on Sunday, April 26, 2026 at Saint Paul’s Chapel, Site II, DELSU, Abraka.

DELSU Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, and his wife, Lady (Mrs) Elizabeth Olabimpe Asagba, leading the University community in Thanksgiving Offering during the 18th Convocation Pre-Convocation Thanksgiving Service.

Tracing the University’s metamorphosis, Professor Asagba recalled how DELSU was founded in 1992 from its early days as a Teachers’ Training College, through a College of Education, and later affiliate campuses of the University of Benin and Bendel State University to its present status as a thirty-four-year-old bona fide academic institution.

He acknowledged that the growth and development of DELSU was a clear evidence of the grace of God upon the University.

He further thanked God for the harmony the University is experiencing. Professor Asagba also appealed to the University community to be patient with some of Management’s policies as they were geared towards the ultimate benefit of both staff and students.

The Vice Chancellor concluded by enjoining all staff to give their utmost in service to the University for posterity sake.

In his sermon earlier, the preacher and Chairman of DELSU’s College of Chaplains, Reverend Father (Dr) James Urien while preaching on “Leadership” admonished staff of the University to serve diligently.

Reverend Father Urien also enjoined them to serve with the fear of God as example of good leadership. He also said that giving thanks to God brings more blessings and greater heights.

He further stated that the pre-convocation thanksgiving service meant different things to different people. To the University, he said it was time to thank God for the successful harvest of graduates. To students, it was time to thank God for achieving their goal of completing their studies. To parents, it was time to thank God for making their sacrifices to educate their wards not to be in vain, while to Abraka community, it was time to thank God as the University has made the community known everywhere.

In conclusion, Reverend Father Urien urged the Vice Chancellor and members of staff to leave behind a legacy of integrity, faith and pure vocation.

Other highlights of the Thanksgiving service were Pre-Convocation Thanksgiving offering led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba and his wife, Lady (Mrs) Elizabeth Olabimpe Asagba, special musical renditions by Saint Paul’s Chapel Mass Choir and photo sessions of DELSU Principal Officers and members of clergy.

Dignitaries present during the thanksgiving service included DELSU Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba and his wife, Lady (Mrs) Elizabeth Olabimpe Asagba, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Edmund Aviedo Atakpo and his wife, Dr. (Mrs) Theresa Atakpo, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Hilary Ijeoma Owamah and his wife, Mrs Victoria Owamah, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Douglasson Omotor, Provost of Oleh Campus, Professor Austine Atonuje, DELSU Registrar, Mrs Rufina Ufuoma Ufiofio, DELSU Bursar, Mrs Otimeyin Ekakitie-Omajuwa, DELSU Librarian, Dr (Mrs) Josephine Eruterio Onohwakpor, Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Professor Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri, Provosts and Deputy Provosts, Deans and Associate Deans, Directors and Deputy Directors, staff as well as students of the University.
