NEMA Coordinates Search, Rescue Operation Following Building Collapse In Abuja

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Operations Office, is coordinating a multi-agency search and rescue (SAR) operation following the collapse of a three-storey building under construction at Jikwoyi District in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The incident occurred at about 11:17hrs on Friday, 3rd April 2026.

Upon receipt of the distress alert, NEMA promptly activated critical response stakeholders, including the FCT Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Nigerian Red Cross Society, and the construction company handling the project.

The Head of NEMA Abuja Operations Office, Mr. Zakari Abubakar, led the response team and deployed emergency facilities from the Emergency Response Ambulance Bay (ERAB), Asokoro, to the scene of the incident.

As at the time of this report, five (5) persons have been successfully rescued from the rubble and evacuated to the Sister Nativity Hospital for medical attention.

Preliminary information from workers at the site indicates that one person may still be trapped under the debris, necessitating the deployment of excavators and other heavy-duty equipment to support ongoing rescue efforts.
