Delta Journalist, Oliver Condemns Move To Upgrade Ozoro Poly, Two Others To Universities

Publisher of Secret Reporters, a vibrant investigative online media platform, Comrade Fejiro Oliver, has condemned the move by the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led adminstration to upgrade the College of Education Agbor, to a University of Education, Anwai Campus of the Delta State University, to Delta State University of Science and Agriculture, and the Ozoro Polytechnic, to Delta State University of Science and Technology.

On Tuesday, Okowa forwarded bills to the Delta State House of Assembly, seeking the support of the lawmakers.

Okowa in his letter stated that the move was as a continuous increase in the number of Deltans jostling for space into the few existing universities as a result of the increase in the number of admission seekers.

He further stated that the decision was also to meet up with the federal government decision to upgrade educational and technical education in the country by having degree awarding institutions in these areas.

Reacting, Fejiro Oliver in a Facebook post described the move as a wrong decision considering the financial demands and ethnicity.

He said: “How can a Governor from Delta North establish two universities in Delta North?

“Why upgrade Polytechnics and College of Education to universities when he has not finished funding Delta State University, Abraka?

“If he must upgrade, why not do so in Ijaw land and cancel the one in Agbor?”

He continued: “Okowa should not take our silence despite the many wrongs of his government for a ride.”

Furthermore, he called on the Sheriff Oborowheri-led House of Assembly to “throw away that bill into the thrash.’

Meanwhile, the lawmakers have received the requests of the Governor to establish the three new universities to be known as Delta State University of Education, Agbor. Delta State University of Science and Agriculture, Anwai-Asaba and Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro.
