Tuition Increase: DSPG SUG Tells Students To Shun Protests, Says Mgt. Has Reversed Decision

The Student Union Government (SUG), Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, has called on students of the institution not to buy into calls for protests over increment of tuition fees by the management.
Recall that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), had vowed to ground academic activities in the school if the decision is not reversed by the school’s management.

(SUG President), Oghenovo J. Okeoghene, SUG Sec Gen and Ahaneku Valentine Odinaka, SUG P.R.O, said that students should rest assured that the Union is determined to protect the rights of students, just as they called on everyone aggrieved to shelve the idea of protests and return back to classes to continue learning.
According to the statement, Enebeli said many have tagged her a coward and one who aligns herself and her government with that of the school management simply because she did not support the idea of protests.
The statement said: “First of all, I really want us to apply wisdom as well as exhausting our first two C’s (Consultation and Consolidation) to at least be reasonably justifiable before resolving to last measure of confrontation if the first two measures eventually fail. As learned individuals we are, we must always do things with some level of logic, responsibility and uprightness,
“That been said, just as we earlier promised that we would get back to them, we have been able to meet up with the school management and every other relevant stakeholders once again to still do something regarding the school fees as vast number of us can’t still cope with what they earlier resolved to. So, after much deliberations and considerations, they agreed to reduce the initial fees of *
ND2/HND2
#56,600 to former payment, while that of fresher’s (new intake)
(ND1/HND1) still remains the way it is (#61,700).
“So, my fellow students, you can now see that with the much efforts we put up to it again they have shifted ground again a little, so, please, let’s accept this in good faith and return back into our various classes to continue our academic activities.
“Please, don’t give in to naysayers or listen to those who don’t always see good in every good things. All these people are just trying to instigate you for no just cause or hit up the student community all for self-goals, NOT really for your interest a bit!
We have some of our senior colleagues here who already graduated from this school, please, chat them up and ask them how much they paid during their respective times and come back here to tell us about it. Take for instance, ask class of 2016/2017 how much their freshers (ND1/HND1) paid during their time, their non-indigenes paid #59,280(20,000 acceptance fee excluded), and Deltans about #45,000 apart from their acceptance fee too. And go on to find out about the other subsequent sessions to know more. Why am I really saying this? I just really want us to know that it’s just a little difference we are seeing in these things, so don’t just let them talk you up into causing unnecessary mayhem that can eventually put your studies into hold or into serious jeopardy.”
