The Police say five cars and three Lorries were involved in the pile-up early Monday morning. Investigators were initially unable to say exactly how many people were injured.

The A5 motorway had to be completely closed in the direction of Heidelberg (north) for the clean-up work, and to determine the cause of the accident.

There was a traffic jam on the opposite carriageway toward Karlsruhe (south), with police criticizing drivers for slowing down to see what had happened.
