Management of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has declared a two-day lecture free day for students of the institution to mourn the death of two students killed by a Dangote truck during an accident early this week.
A statement by the Public Relations Division of the Vice Chancellor’s Office said “the University Management wishes to express its sadness over the unfortunate tragic death of some students as a result of the accident that occurred on Tuesday, 4th May, 2021 along the Police Station road, Abraka.”
Furthermore, the Management “expressed its condolence to the families of the affected students and the entire student body for the unfortunate incident.”
According to the statement, there will be no lectures on Friday, 7th and Monday, 10th, adding that this was in honour of the deceased and to enable students mourn their departed colleagues.
However, the 2020/2021 matriculation for fresh students will still hold on Saturday as scheduled.
Meanwhile, students of the institution took to the streets to protest deaths of some students as a result of accidents in recent times.
Angry students are said to have blocked the entrance of Campus 3 main gate, as they demanded justice for their deceased colleagues.
Oasis Magazine (OM) gathered that it took the persuasion of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Andy Egwunyenga for the protesting students to be pacified.
Egwunyenga also promised to put machineries in place to tackle the cause of such accidents in the community.
