Women Begin 7-Day Protest Over Renewed Cult Clash In Sapele

Women, yesterday, under the aegis of Sapele Okpe Community women popularly known as, Egwemese in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, embarked on peaceful protest calling for an end to the town’s renew cult clashes and violence activities in the town.

It should be recalled that early this month, gunmen shot one Shagari, a mechanic, dead as he was leaving his workshop along New road that evening in what was suspected to be a cult war.

Shagari’s death came on the heels of the alleged shooting of two young men in the town, which according to the women is too much for them to bear as mothers.

30 women waving palm fronds, singing mournful and protest songs, marched round the town before berthing at the Sapele Okpe Community Hall along Adeola Road in Sapele.

“We are particularly moved by the senseless cult war amongst our youths in the community. We commiserate with the families of the bereaved, women and men of Sapele and we are saying enough is enough,” she said.

The protesting women called on parents to caution their wards, and do all they can to stop the orgy of violence.

The Secretary of the body, Mrs Kate Temiagin, also spoke on why they protested.

“It’s our first day of protest we will do this every day for 7 days thereafter we will place a curse on perpetrators of this crimes. We don’t want cult issues nor violence and we are calling on government to rise up and hear our cries and do something to what is happening to our children, our brothers and our fathers, we are saying no to cult killing or kidnapping,” she said.
