The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Delta State University, Professor Austine Anigala, has debunked reports that the Management of the University has directed students to pay One Thousand Naira as dues to replace monthly imprest to departmental heads for the monthly running of departments.

Speaking to Oasis Magazine (OM) during a phone conversation, Anigala said that the management will make monthly imprest available to departments as long as the Delta State Government makes funds available for overhead expenses, adding that departmental heads must first retire previous monies collected before applying for a new imprest.

According to him, the management was very concerned about the issue of accountability, stressing that dues collected in the various departments must be judiciously used in developing the departments.

Anigala noted that monthly income to the university has drastically reduced.

OM gathered that a bulletin from the office of the Registrar, Dan Urhibo, dated 20^th October, 2017, stated that One Thousand Naira for Departmental dues, Five Hundred Naira for departmental handbook, One Thousand Naira for Faculty dues and One Thousand Naira for Faculty journal were to be paid by each student.

The bulletin also read: “These payments are distinct from payments of Students Associations Dues at Departmental and Faculty levels.”

According to a reliable source under conditions of anonymity, the departmental dues of One Thousand Naira and departmental handbook levy of Five Hundred Naira were recently introduced.

A Head of Department who also spoke to OM under conditions of anonymity disclosed that receiving monthly imprest henceforth will be difficult, saying that the source for this in time past was the sale of Faculty Handbooks (which has now been stopped) and regulated by Faculty votes.

While the University Bursar denied any knowledge of these developments, the Registrar responding to our call in a furious manner said that his son in Covenant University pays the sum of Ten Thousand Naira, while his wife pays the sum of Fifteen Thousand Naira as departmental dues.
