Supervision In Quality Control, A Veritable Tool For Effective Leadership— University Don

DEAN, Faculty of Education, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Prof. Patrick Oghuvbu, has identified the role of supervision in quality control for both human and material resources as a veritable tool for effective leadership and administration.
Oghuvbu, spoke in Abraka during the 60th in the series of inaugural lectures of the Delta State University (DELSU),Abraka, with the theme, ” Decline In Quality Of Education: Is It Inadequate Resources Or Supervision.

He said effective supervision is the positive ingredient for effective leadership and effective leadership is the ingredient of effective administration, adding that good administration was a major catalyst for the effective utilization of available human and material resources in an institution which he noted produces quality.
He said, inter-alia: ” Man is a social being; hence, effective supervision creates a positive social working climate, filled with love for work, among colleagues (staff), which breeds  unity of purpose, action, goal achievements in a peaceful environment leading to growth and development, the engine of quality.”
He regretted that during the oil boom, the Federal and State Governments could not improve the nation’s economy.
While saying that another a case in point was when students of DELSU were more than the population in the community and generated so much money, management of the university failed to manage the quality of human and material resources, projects embarked upon could not be completed due to poor supervision.
The inaugural lecturer held that the perceived decline in quality in the nation’s schools was not due to inadequate resources, but inadequate supervision.
Oghuvbu said: “In Nigeria, the major problem facing the provision of quality education is corruption. The short and long term effect of declining quality of education is the production of more corrupt individuals.”
The dean recommended that to reduce corruption and to enhance the quality of education in the country, effective supervision was necessary in some sectors which include: rules and regulations, which are guidelines for supervision in every sector of the Nigerian economy, must be followed; employment of human resources must be based on quality selection process and not federal or tribal character or quota system; heads of institutions should be allowed to monitor and supervise state or federal projects in their institutions among others.
