Having gone through the rigors of electioneering, a new executive has emerged to pilot the affairs of the Student Union Government (SUG), Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka for the 2018/2019 academic session.
Those elected are Comrade Okpako Oghenevwegba (President); Comrade Osademe Okechukwu (Secretary -General); Comrade Chukwuedo Azubuike (Director of Finance); Comrade Okolie Michael (Director of Information) and Comrade Iwezulu Dominic (Director of Welfare).
Elections for the legislative arm of the SUG Senatorial positions and Students Representatives Council (SRC) was held and new elected officers have also emerged to also run the affairs of the arm for the 2018/2019 academic session.
Announcing the results at the election ground in Site Two of the university, Abraka, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Augustus Atubi, described the election as free, fair and credible.
He charged the new executive not to perceive their new offices as an avenue to witch-hunt and oppress perceived enemies but see ot as a call to selfless service, insisting that students unionism remained a campaign for service.
Atubi said: “It is one thing to aspire to occupy a position of thrust and it is another thing to be able to provide qualitative leadership to those entrusted to your care. We have given them the level playing field to contest and emerge as students union leaders, but, again, the university will not tolerate any form of rascality.
“What we want is for them to reciprocate this kind gesture we have demonstrated. So far, through cooperation of the students, we have been able to maintain a stable academic Calendar. DELSU has a reputation for stable academic Calendar in the country and it is due to the cooperation between students, staff and the university management.
