DELSU VC Reaffirms University’s Steadfast Commitment To Enhancing Its Academic Programmes, Facilities

The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, Prof. Samuel Asagba, has reaffirmed the university’s steadfast commitment to enhancing its academic programmes and facilities, aiming to maintain its standing as one of Nigeria’s leading state universities.

The Vice Chancellor stated this in Abraka on Tuesday while receiving the last set of Exit Reports for the November/December 2024 Batch of Accreditation Exercise by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The Vice Chancellor pointed out that the management of Delta State University, Abraka, places high premium on NUC Accreditation exercises because they provide opportunities for external assessment of the quality of its academic programmes against established benchmarks.

Prof Asagba expressed his profound gratitude to all of the thirty-two professors from different universities and sixteen staff of the NUC who participated in the accreditation exercise for the sixteen programmes covered in the November/December 2024 session.

He described the exercises as an opportunity for valuable collaboration between the university and experts from different universities in Nigeria and assured that all observations, comments, and recommendations would be given utmost attention and acted upon diligently.

Speaking at the presentation of the Exit Reports for the last two programmes on Tuesday, the respective leaders of the NUC Accreditation Teams for Early Childhood Education, Prof Ugochukwu Amadi, from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, and Prof Chika Moore from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, pointed out that the accreditation teams assessed the quality of the academic programmes in the areas of curricula, facilities, staff competence, lecturer/students ratio, documentation and performance of graduates of the programmes in the industry among others.

They thanked the management of the university, the Directorate of Academic Planning as well as well as the faculties and departments they visited for making their job easy, noting that the team spirit they observed in the university is worthy of emulation.

They pointed out areas where the academic programmes performed well and called for their sustenance as well as areas that need improvements for consequent remedial actions.

In his vote of thanks to the NUC accreditation teams, the Director of Academic Planning at the University, Prof Hilary Ijeoma Owamah, expressed gratitude to the thirty-two professors from twenty-four Nigerian universities who graciously accepted the call to participate in the accreditation exercise.

He commended their dedication and sacrifice in traveling long distances from various parts of the country to Abraka for the exercise and by so doing contributing significantly to the advancement of quality education at the university.

Prof Owamah highlighted that the recently concluded NUC accreditation exercise covered three postgraduate programmes and thirteen undergraduate programmes.

He listed the postgraduate programmes as Master of Banking and Finance, Master of Public Administration as well as Master of Accounting, and the undergraduate programmes as Office and Information Management, Public Administration, Medical Laboratory Science, Anatomy, Entrepreneurship, Pharmacology, Theatre Arts, Business Education, Technical Education, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Industrial Mathematics, and Early Childhood Education.

He further explained that the November/December NUC accreditation exercise was carried out under the tenure of two Vice Chancellors of the university and two Executive Secretaries of the NUC, due to a transition in leadership at both institutions between November 17 and December 17, 2024.

Present at the presentation of the exit reports were the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof (Mrs) Rosemary Ngozi Okoh, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof Ochuko Anomohanran, the Registrar, Mrs Rufina Ufuoma Ufiofio, other principal officers, Deans, Heads of Departments and professors of assessed academic programmes among others.
