Funding Remains DELSU’s Biggest Challenge- VC
By Daniel Dafe
The Vice Chancellor, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Victor Peretomode has appealed to the Delta State Governor to heed the request of the university’s management to increase the financial allocation to the institution, saying that “funding remains DELSU’s biggest challenge.”
Professor Peretomode who spoke during the 12th convocation of the university recently, added: “Our University has emerged to be one of the best and choiced institutions in Nigeria. This recognition demands more funding in order for us to cope with expectations and engender academic and scientific breakthroughs and increase our carrying capacity.”
He continued: “We need to build on our achievements by improving on our accreditation status. This means we will need more funds for expensive science and technology and vocational equipment and machines for accreditation purpose since it is a recurring phenomenon.
“The university is also experiencing acute shortage of lecturers in many disciplines especially Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, Engineering, Pharmacy, English, Foundations of Education, etc.”
Furthermore, he appealed to the Governor to approve the request for the appointment of new lecturers, as he also requested the completion of the main administrative block project of the university by the state government which has been under construction for six years now.
Speaking further, he disclosed that the university is in dire need of accommodation for staff and halls of residence for students in the permanent site.
While commending the state government for the infrastructural development going on in the said campus, he called for the construction of a three kilometer internal access road to enable easy access to these facilities when completed.
He called on DELSU alumni and other stakeholders to come to the university’s aid, noting that the state government cannot do it alone.
