DELSU VC Performs Groundbreaking Ceremony For MPCS Hall, Warehouse, Office Complex

The Vice Chancellor, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Victor Peretomode, has performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the DELSU Workers’ Multipurpose Cooperative Society’s (MPCS) multi-purpose hall, warehouse and an office complex.

The ceremony took place recently at Site III of the institution’s campus in Abraka.

Speaking during the programme, Prof. Peretomode, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Prof. (Mrs.) Grace Ogwu, said that the said projects embarked on by MPCS “is a stand post that will change the fortunes of the Society now and in the nearest future.”

According to him, MPCS has become a game changer in the social economic affairs of the members and also a dependable partner in progress with the university.”

He added: “Through the role of the Society, our staff have been able to own houses, establish small scale businesses, give their children/wards qualitative education and drive good cars.”

Continuing, he said: “Today, the Society is adding a new economic stream of income that will enhance the fortunes of her members. The diversification of its operations through these projects is indeed a welcome development.”

While commending the present Management Committee for “thinking out of the box,” he promised to continue to ensure that the Society is given the necessary encouragement and support, noting that most Co-operative Societies all over the nation are engaged in real estate, hospitality business, among other ventures to rake in additional income.

Peremotode appealed to members of MPCS to ensure that they pay their loans, as he called on the Management Committee to avoid granting loans capable of running down the Co-operative Society.

Earlier, while delivering his welcome address, the President of the Society, Mr. Edward Agbure, said that “the dream of the Management Committee would have been a mirage if not for the magnanimity of the amiable Vice Chancellor.”

Agbure commended the VC for assisting the Mangement Committee in retrieving outstanding loans of almost N400, 000, 000 owed by members.

Furthermore, he thanked Peretemode for the land given to them already, but requested the management to consider making more land available to them so as to accommodate other envisaged projects such as their guest house, eatery and relaxation spots.

The president assured members that embarking on the said projects will not in any way affect the granting of loans to members as at when due.

According to him, since he assumed office, the time frame for granting of loans has drastically reduced, saying that soon it will be a thing of hours to obtain loans.

High point of the occasion was the laying of the foundation for the projects by the VC.

Present at the ceremony were the Delta State Director of Co-operative Societies, Mr. C. Onyekpe, Lawrence Omo-Aghoja, Provost, College of Health Sciences, DELSU, Abraka and Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), DELSU Chapter, Mr. Izu Monday.
