The National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Committee (NANS JCC Delta Axis), have honored the President of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Youthwing, Worldwide, Comrade Efemena Umukoro, with an ‘Icon of Hope and Inspiration Award,’ over his commitment as a human rights activist to the welfare of others, especially students in the state.
The said presentation to the Urhobo youth leader was done in Abraka by the State Chairman, Egwolo Akpere, during a security meeting organized by the Divisional Police Officer of the Abraka Division, CSP Hassan Issah and stakeholders in the area.
Responding to questions from journalists after the brief ceremony, Comrade Umukoro, while commending the student body for the honour done him, said he dedicated the award to selfless activists and leaders in Nigeria that are out there contributing towards making Nigeria a great nation.
He said: “The award means a lot to me because it shows that Nigerian youths, not just from Urhobo Nation, but across the three Senatorial Districts, appreciate my commitment to the fight against human rights abuse and standing for what is right at all times.
“It came as a surprise to me and I am glad because it shows that my efforts are appreciated by the over 1.7 million Nigerian youths currently studying in the 14 tertiary institutions in Delta State.
“This recognition will spur me to do more and I will continue to do my best in impacting meaningfully the lives of our youths, defending their rights, lecturing them on the need to be peaceful and be good ambassadors to their family, community and the nation.”
He continued: “While thanking them for this noble award, I also use this medium to call on all Nigerian students to continue to be law abiding, useful to themselves and also shun cultism and drug abuse because if we must become leaders, we must be able to stand tall and that we must do now.”
Meanwhile, the youth leader also said he was dedicating the award to the President General of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Worldwide, Chief (Engr.) Joe Omene.
