Auntie Azuks Schools Clinch First Position At Delta Quiz/Debate Competition

Auntie Azuks Schools, Sapele, has emerged the best performing school at the quiz and debate competition organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Delta State, for senior secondary schools in the state.

The finals of the contest took place recently at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba.

This year’s event themed: ‘Access to a Child-Friendly Justice System’ held alongside the 2020 ‘Day of the African Child’ programme.

A total of nine schools from the three senatorial districts in the state participated in the finals.

Auntie Azuks Schools, Sapele, excelled at the local government and Delta Central Senatorial District stages and then emerged tops at the final in Asaba.
Agbojie Hope of Frontline Grammar School, Agbor and Nwaiwu Chindere of Charity Secondary School, Warri came out second and third respectively.

High point of the programme was the presentation of gifts to outstanding schools and students by the wife of the Governor, Dame Edith Okowa and Mrs. Flora Alatan, Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development.

The representative of Auntie Azuks Schools, Jane Ebosa, who won herself a laptop, during a chat with Oasis Magazine (OM), said: “I am not surprised that I came out tops because I had sleepless nights to prepare for the competition.”

Jane, aged 16, thanked the organizers for putting the programme together, as she appreciated the state government for the prize presented to her.

She continued: “I am glad with the laptop prize I won, but I call on the Governor to consider giving scholarships up to the university level to those that excel in such contests,” as she urged the government to hold such competitions often and not wait for ‘Day of the African Child’ programme’ to present one.

“I am glad about the Governor’s SMART Agenda and also excited that this year’s programme also commemorated the 100 black children shot in South Africa during the Soweto uprising in 1976,” she added.

Furthermore, she called on states in Nigeria to adequately implement the Child Rights Act.

She also commended the school’s management, her parents, classmates and all that made it possible for her to come out victorious in the contest.

Oasis Magazine (OM) also spoke with some staff of the school on the rare feat achieved by one of their students.

According to Prince Francis Anih, Principal of the institution, he nicknamed the school ‘the award winning school’ after they clinched the first spot in the said competition.

“Last year, one of our students, Akpevwe, came 3rd during a JET competition in Nigeria.

“Many new generational schools focus on owning big buildings and buying exotic buses. Since we don’t have that capacity, we decided to focus on impacting our pupils and students with quality education. That is our secret,” he noted.

Furthermore, he said the government should consider also helping schools that excel during academic competitions like this by assisting them in building of some infrastructure lacked in such schools.

On his part, Mr. Moses Anih, Director of the school, said that Ebosa is a pure Auntie Azuks’ breed because she started from the crèche in the school.

He added: “She has spent all her academic life with us. In our institution, we have a motto: ‘Ut Educo Floreat’ meaning ‘Let Education Fluorish’. All we do here is centred on this. We combine a sound academic education with Christian principles.”

According to him, Auntie Azuks holds a 3-day fast at the beginning of every month and also through the Spiritual Head of the school, a Catholic Priest, Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Ogochukwu Anamali, conducts the Holy Mass termly as well as a 21-day prayer and fasting programme at the begining of the school year in January yearly.

“What we do here is more than a business; it is a passion and we handle it with all the commitment it deserves. That is our secret,” he opined.

In the same vein, Mrs. Iloka Anthonia, said that she was not surprised that Ebosa came out first, as she urged her to remain focused to enable her do more for the institution.
