By Daniel Dafe
As good and loyal ambassadors to the Urhobo project, the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Youthwing, Worldwide, led by Comrade Efemena Umukoro, yesterday, 11th July 2020, paid a solidarity visit to the Orogun Divisional Police Station, Orogun in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, as they condemned the attack of the police station by hoodlums.
The visit, we learnt was to boost the morals of all mobile officers serving Orogun people and to show the division a genuine solidarity over the attack of the said station by hoodlums who also carted away firearms belonging to men of the division.
Speaking to journalists, Umukoro said the information got to the leadership of UPU youthwing through some indigenes of Orogun who complained bitterly that the police in a bid to fish out the culprits resorted to raiding of houses in the community on a daily basis.
He continued: “As a partner in progress and good ambassadors of our people, this disturbing information made the leadership of the UPU youthwing see the need to send a delegation to Orogun Police Division for a proper interface to first sympathise with the police and also appeal to them to apply the tactics they are known for in such situations without violating the human rights of those in thr community.”
Speaking further, the youth leader said: “Comrades in Orogun Community joined the UPU youthwing delegation and all discussions were fruitful, as we were also warmly received by a representative of the DPO.”
During an interface with some youths of Orogun Community, he expressed his disgust over the sad development, as he enjoined all youths of Orogun to be law abiding and receptive to the division as a good host community.
Furthermore, Comrade Umukoro stated that his leadership would not condole illegality and any form of crime and abuse of police officers, adding that any youth caught misbehaving would be left to face the music himself.
His words: “Urhobo youths are known for great potentials and hospitality to visitors alike. We are highly an intellectual and responsible people. We would not sit down and watch any youth bring disgrace to rubbish our hard earned reputation hence am using this medium to warn anyone who has the tendency of crime to desist from calling us as we shall ensure such a youth is properly persecuted to serve as deterrent to others.”
He expressed his sadness over the incidence describing it as barbaric, uncivilized, not matured and nothing to write home about.”
