Edo Poll: Presidency Says Buhari Can’t Emulate Obasanjo In Electoral Fraud

Following the defeat suffered by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the Edo governorship election held on Saturday, September 19, President Muhammadu Buhari has been described as a true Nigerian democrat, Legit.ng reports.

Oasis Magazine (OM) had reported that the governor of the state and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Godwin Obaseki roundly defeated Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of APC at the Governorship election.

While the PDP candidate, Obaseki won in 13 local government areas of the state, Ize-Iyamu clinched victory in the remaining 5 local government areas.

The outcome of the election has, however, continued to generate reactions from Nigerians.

Also, President Buhari has been hailed by many for allowing a level playing ground for the contenders.

Speaking on why Nigerians, especially the people of Edo state should be grateful to Buhari, the Special Assistant to the president on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, in a tweet on Tuesday, September 22, described her principal as a lover of democracy.

She said it is absurd and unthinkable for people to expect President Buhari to emulate former president Olusegun Obasanjo in election manipulation, adding that many politicians turn politics into monsters.

Speaking further, Onochie described those who insisted that Buhari should emulate Obasanjo by manipulating democratic processes as members of APDPC.

Her tweet reads: “President Buhari is a democrat. Those who insist that Buhari should emulate pres Obasanjo by manipulating democratic processes are members of APDPC. They are dangerous.

“They turn everything good in politics into monsters. Their followers are hounding democrats online. Ignore them.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that Godwin Obaseki said he won the election because President Buhari wanted people’s will to succeed.

It was reported that while speaking in an exclusive interview with BBC on Sunday, September 20, after being declared the winner of the keenly contested election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Obaseki said the president’s neutrality sealed his victory.

The governor disclosed that prior to the election, President Buhari issued a statement where he gave a strict warning that all party candidates going into the poll must get a “level playing field.”
