Deputy Governor, Deacon Kingsley Burutu Otuaro has described the high level of insecurity in the Niger Delta region as worrisome given the fact that so much efforts have been made by government and stakeholders to achieve peace in the region.

Deacon Kingsley Otuaro stated this when he received members of the Niger Delta Dialogue led by Chief Judith Burdon Asuni who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Asaba.

The Deputy Governor said, “the phenomenon of insecurity is known by all over the world, and in the Niger Delta region it was more worrisome because the results were not commensurate with the efforts made by government and stakeholders as it is like a dialogue of the deaf.”

Deacon Otuaro noted that “government and relevant stakeholders in the Niger Delta project cannot afford to relax over the issue of insecurity but must continue in order to have a secured region.”

He said the Niger Delta region was very critical to the nation’s development because of its rich oil resources which is the mainstay of the national economy.

The Deputy Governor said it was worrisome that other sectors of the nation’s economy were not being developed as the reliance on crude oil had made it a mono economy.

Deacon Otuaro emphasised that insecurity in the Niger Delta region is a threat to our national life, stressing that all efforts must be geared towards achieving peace for a more secured region.

He noted that the Okowa administration had laudable achievements, stressing that without sustained peace and security nothing would have been achieved.

Deacon Otuaro promised that the reports on insecurity presented by the Niger Delta Dialogue would be looked into as it was intended to achieve peace, adding that the state government had institutional structures for peace building.

The Deputy Governor called on stakeholders to muster the will power to do those things that are pivotal to peace in the Niger Delta.

The Leader of the Niger Delta Dialogue, Chief Judith Burdon Asuni said the group had six reports on insecurity in the Niger Delta after concluding its thorough research on the region.

Chief Asuni who is an American by birth and a Nigerian by nationalisation said the recommendations were key in achieving peace in the region and highlighted some challenges faced in the region.

She described the Deputy Governor as a conflict resolution manager whose wealth of experience in peace building would assist the state government.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of the reports to the Deputy Governor, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro.
