Delta Commissioner Warns Against Keeping Children In School Beyond Stipulated Time

Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has cautioned heads of public and private schools in the state to adhere strictly to the official time table guiding academic activities for the 2020/2021 session.

The Commissioner in charge of the ministry, Mr. Patrick Ukah, gave the warning in Asaba on Monday in a statement saying that the warning has become necessary because the ministry has been inundated with complaints from parents and guardians that pupils and students are kept in schools beyond the stipulated time by the ministry.

For the avoidance of doubt, Mr. Ukah said that only schools with large populations should run two shifts that will not have more than 40 pupils/students in a class at the same time.

According to him, the first shift will run from 8am to 12 noon, while the second shift is from 1pm to 5pm just as schools on full stream will run from 8am and 2pm on school days.

He gave a ray of hope that stakeholders in the education sector will continue to meet to review the possibility of the resumption of academic activities for KG 1-3 pupils as part of the phased resumption of schools ahead of the earlier announced date of January 2021.
