Return Of DELSU To ASUU Excites VC, As University Gets New Exco
The Vice- Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, Prof. Andy O. Egwunyenga has expressed excitement and gratitude to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for it’s consistency and sacrifice in pursuing the ideals of the Union.
Prof. Egwunyenga who was speaking at the occasion of a courtesy call from the Union, said he was delighted at the return of ASUU DELSU to the National fold.
He remarked that as a University, DELSU is open to all, and being a place of diversity, welcomes all shades of opinions.
“Here, we fight with our brains, not our fists,” he told his visitors.
“We want everybody to be together,” he added.
Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation, Comrade Professor Muhammad Mutakka Usman, who is also the Convener and Chairperson of the Electoral Committee explained the need for ASUU DELSU to belong to the National Body, because of the benefits derivable from the relationship.
Meanwhile, a nine-man Executive Council (Exco) led by Dr. Godwin Demaki has been elected to run the affairs of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Delta State University branch (ASUU-DELSU), for the next two years.
The powerful National delegation was at the special Congress meeting of ASUU DELSU on that elected officers for the Union after about seven years outside the ASUU family.
The executive which was presented to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Andy O. Egwunyenga, pledged to cooperate with the administration for the benefit of all stakeholders.
The Chairman promised that the Union under his leadership would not be combative or ethnocentric, but constructive in all its engagements with relevant authorities.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof. Egwunyenga congratulated the new executive on their success at the polls and commended the National President and Chairman of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi for his abiding faith in ASUU- DELSU, assuring that the branch does not take it for granted.
He pledged that the University would continue to improve the quality of education at all times, stating that ASUU and his administration are partners in progress.
Given the travails of the ASUU-DELSU in the past seven years, the Chief executive who has been giving DELSU an enlightened and committed leadership, advised the new executive to rebuild confidence in the members without compromising the cherished values of the Union.
Speaking earlier, the Convener/Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Muhammad Mutakka Usman explained that his delegation was mandated by NEC to normalize the activities of ASUU DELSU with a view of giving it a new lease of life.
He said that the mission of restoring normalcy at ASUU-DELSU has been accomplished with the election of the new Exco, with the assistance and support of the University administration.
According to him, “all issues have been trashed out, with the interest of all considered and guided by the Union’s Constitution.”
