JUST IN: Again, DELSU Mgt Meets With Students’ Reps Over School Fees Increase…SEE RESOLUTIONS

Rising from a meeting with student representatives on the school fees increase in Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, on Tuesday, the management of the institution has okayed a 15% reduction in school fees for students in the institution, but said that those in programmes in Law, Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing will not benefit from this, saying that these four professional programmes are not only regulated by professional bodies, but are generally quite expensive to run all over the world.

The said meeting was to conclude the conversation initiated on Monday 15th March 2021 to deliberate on the fees adjustment that was announced by the university authority.

Mixed reaction had trailed the announcement of the school fees adjustment.

A communiqué after the meeting signed by Professor C. M. A Iwegbue, Dean of students, DELSU, Comr. Chika kessy Ossai, Director of Special Duties, NANS Zone B, Comr. Godwin Oyovweadjebre Saturday, NADESSTU President, Comr. Joshua Ojaide, DELSU SUG President and Comr. Precious Akporudju, Faculties Representatives, said: “In line with its culture of dialogue and responsiveness to the views of all stakeholders, the management of the Delta State University, Abraka, once again met with the representatives of students associations made up of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU), the Students Union Government (SUG) and the representatives of the different faculties in the University.

According to the communiqué, it was also agreed that in order to reduce the burden of the payment of fees by students, the management has worked out a system of payment by instalments to enable students to pay in two instalments of 70% on registration and 30% before the second semester examination.

Adding: ”Payment by instalment is only available on application and approval by the University.”

Also, a sustainable means of dialogue was established to monitor and ensure implementation of decisions reached at the meeting.

Furthermore, the communiqué said that ”the University Management, in order to reduce the burden of fees on indigent students, has established a work study programme whereby interested students can work within the University and earn some income to support themselves.”

DELSU students were also commended for their maturity, resort to dialogue and the responsible and peaceful manner they conducted themselves.
