School Fees: DELSU Mgt Meets NANS, Others, Justifies Review, As Students’ Representatives Reject Increase, Meeting Adjourned
By Daniel Dafe, Abraka
Management of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, on Monday met with students’ bodies and stakeholders, as missed reactions have trailed the move by the institution to review the amount paid by students of the tertiary institution as school fess.
Recall that on Sunday, NANS condemned the increase, saying that a meeting will hold on Monday to address the concerns of critics of the move in and beyond the university community.
A communiqué signed by Professor C.M.A. Iwegbue, Dean of Students, DELSU, Abraka, Comrade Ossai Chika, Director of Special Duties, NANS, Zone B, Comrade Godwin Saturday, NADDESTU President, Comrade Joshua Ojaide, DELSU SUG President and Comrade Precious Akporudju, Faculty Representative, said the 4-hour meeting between the management of the institution and representatives of organized students’ association drawn from NANS, NADDESTU, SUG and representatives of Faculties was to address concerns and reactions on the adjustment of school fees.
At the said meeting, the University administration provided the adjusted fees in a graphic form and offered explanations for the justification of the adjustment.

But, in their response, the representatives of the students were of the view that although there was a general appreciation on rising cost of research and training, the fees adjustments were unacceptable and duplicated.
After an exhaustive deliberation, it was agreed that all parties should return for further consultation and that there was need for compromise from both sides.
According to the communiqué, the meeting was adjourned following a request by the leaders of NANS and a new date would be announced for resumption of discussion on the final resolutions of the issues at stake.
Meanwhile, all parties called on students of the institution “to remain calm and look forward to an amicable resolution of the issue at stake.”
