Electioneering Process, Pathway To Sustaining Good Governance —Group

Coalition for Good Governance in Delta State, a group committed to ensuring that electioneering processes are adequately implemented, managed and monitored to effectively usher in leaders without triggering violence, killings and political godfatherism, has said that creating an environment of free and fair elections will culminate into a perfect democracy system.”

The Convener of the group, Senior Comrade Jefferson Oruoghorie, in a media chat recently, while commending Deltans on their peaceful disposition while marking this year’s Democracy Day activities, also applauded security agencies who he said did their best to maintain peace and order on the said day.

Comrade Oruoghorie advised Deltans in particular and Nigerians generally that the only way to uphold good governance is to defend and justify the necessary process of democracy, adding that electioneering process is a pathway to sustaining good governance.

He stated that most Deltans complain about the leadership of some administration and expect change when they do not participate in elections, saying that ”election apathy is an easy path for violators of the law to do their job.”

Continuing, he said that “a representative democracy is representative to the extent that it ‘absolutely ‘ depends upon the integrity of the elections.”

”When the integrity of the processes leading up to elections and the elections proper are compromised, then democracy is in jeopardy,” he opined.

Speaking further, he appealed to qualified Deltans to register for their Voters Card in order to get prepared as INEC has announced that as from 28th June 2021, Continues Voters Registration(CVR) will commence.

The group, also while addressing the media, also tasked the media on social media hubs to use their platforms to continue t/he enlightenment of the public on the importance of Voters Card Registration and the need to participate in the electoral process.

He further posited that a lack of voter education and registration has led to widespread political apathy and low voters’ turnout.

This, he said has the impact of undermining the trust in and legitimacy of our democracy.

He added: ”Democracies ultimately derive their legitimacy from the participation of engaged citizens. Educating people about their voting rights and how to exercise them is therefore of great importance.

”This is the appropriate time to sensitize all Deltans to come out enmasse to register for their Voters Card. The PVC is your power; it is your tool to choose whosoever you feel can lead you.”

The group appealed to various institutions, stakeholders and the public to ”take this exercise very seriously, noting that this is to enable the process of electioneering be achieved without deficits.”

Oruoghorie also appealed to residents in Delta State to be law abiding and also be security conscious and aware of their environment.
