Unknown gunmen on Sunday shot a Police officer and driver dead, while according to sources an unidentified man who was inside the car was abducted in Warri, Delta State.

The sad incident occurred at Airport junction along Effurun-Warri road, Effurun, Delta State.

The unidentified young man was taken away after killing the police officer and driver.

The victims were driving in a red Venza before they were intercepted by the unknown killers.

Our correspondent who was at the scene of the incident confirmed the death of the police officer and the driver.

Meanwhile, other sources said the dead mobile policeman was attached to a chieftain of the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Micheal Johnny.

The driver murdered was a personal driver to the politician until his death.

The gunmen are believed to be hired assassins and are alleged to be after Chief Johnny and his wife but they were not in the vehicle when the armed men struck at the popular Airport Junction in Effurun.

A report by Niger Delta Today said the incident occurred at about 11:12am on Sunday when the late driver and the mobile policeman had just dropped the politician’s wife at an undisclosed church for Sunday service.

Sources who witnessed the gruesome killing said the late policeman was first shot on his right hand to demobilize him before being shot on the head by the fleeing gunmen.

Both the driver and the mobile policeman, who were in the politician wife’s red Venza Jeep, died on the spot.

The fleeing gunmen were said to have launched the attack in a Yellow Lexus Jeep.

The gunmen, however, did not cart away any property including the official riffle of the deceased policeman from the vehicle.

When contacted, Chief Johnny, an APC Ijaw leader, confirmed the incident to NIGER DELTA TODAY (NDT) Online via telephone.

He said the fleeing hoodlums were after him and his family, saying that his wife was not in the vehicle when the gunmen struck.

While decrying the killing of his driver and his police escort, he said he had reported the matter to the police and investigation had commenced.

At the time of this report, the Delta State Police Command PRO, DSP Edafe Bright confirmed the death of the police officer, but said he was yet to get details.

But added that no one was kidnapped, saying that the target of the gunmen was a lady, saying that she was seen in church.

Oasis Magazine gathered that military officers were at the scene, helping to control and douse the tension.
