By Oguns Sammy (Warri)
Barely few weeks to this year’s Christmas and new year celebrations, the Udu unit Co-ordinator of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Delta State Branch, Comrade Charles Oviri, has charged the youths in the state in general and Udu Local Government Area in particular to shun any of the social vices such as cultism, armed robbery kidnappings, drug abuse and others for them to have an hitch -free Christmas and new year celebrations.
Comrade Oviri gave this charge today in Udu in a chat with news men.
He said the youths should know they are the future leaders, saying they should avoid what would make them to be on the wanted list of the law enforcement agents in the state.
He said: “We all know the Christmas and New year celebrations are by the corner and people especially the youths need money for celebration, but that doesn’t mean, they should involve themselves in crimes to get money for the celebrations”.
Comrade Charles Oviri said Christmas celebration is not a do or die matter, saying the youths should go about their celebrations in a peaceful manner and avoid actions capable of ruining their life.
He also charged the people especially the youths to shun drinking if they must drive, saying they should drive with care for the safety of their lives especially this yuletide.
He said: “l use this medium to call on the youths to stay away from alcohol if they must drive so that they don’t constitute road nuisance to other road users and with this, they can avoid accidents on our roads”.
While thanking the Chairman of Udu Local Government Area for his efforts in ensuring there is peace in the area, he called on him to look into the various challenges being faced by the various communities in the local government area and proffer solutions to them.
Comrade Charles Oviri said among the challenges faced by the people which the body earlier made appeal for were the decongestion of Ubogo Market Junction which has caused a lot of traffic congestions and accident times without number as marketers and tricycle riders now use the road for trading and the appeal to relocate Jigbale Market to Harbour Market, adding that these became necessary because the markets have caused a lot of traffic congestions to the area, among others.
He said: “We have appealed before and we still appeal to the Chairman of Udu Local Government Area, Chief Hon. Jite Brown not to fold his hands but listen to the appeals of the people and look into the various challenges facing the various communities in the local government area in order for the people to have a sigh of relief.”
On the incessant communal clashes in the area such as Aladja and Ogbe-Ijaw crises, Comrade Charles Oviri called for peace among the people just as he called on the Delta State Government led by Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa to find lasting solution(s) to this crises which have claimed lots of lives and the destruction of property since it started.
