The Lucy Okena-led Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN), Delta State Chapter, on Thursday presented the sum of One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100, 000) to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Adagha in Abraka, Delta State, as support to the family in helping them sponsor the education of their daughter, Excellent, saying that just like they did last year, they did the presentation again this year which will continue till she graduates from the university.

SWAN is the female wing of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Recall that while presenting the cash to the family in 2021, the Chairperson of SWAN in Delta, Mrs. Okena, said the child, Excellent became a beneficiary because she met the criteria which are that the child must be an indigent girl and born on 23rd November, 2019 when SWAN Delta was inaugurated.

Speaking on Thursday, Okena said: “We recently remembered that our baby is already due for the renewal of the scholarship, so we had to make every arrangement to get it done.

“We know that she is doing well, and we know by the special grace of God this September she is going to start her schooling.”

While commending the parents for looking after the baby, she thanked well-meaning Nigerians and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for supporting the association’s programmes in the state.

She continued: “We do career talk, sensitization, catch them young etc in various schools with mentorship of the girl child and charity work as part of ICAN corporate social responsibility.

According to her, the support to the Adagha family is to enable Excellent become a better person in the future, saying that it is their desire to see that she becomes a future Nigeria president or a minister in the Federal Republic of Nigeria or any other notable office.

“By the special grace of God, He will continue to help us and we will continue to come and redeem our pledge every year to make sure that she enjoys the benefit of a good education. That is the major reason why we are here today, so that we can continue from where we stopped last year.”

Speaking on behalf of the Adagha family, Mr. John Adagha, Excellent’s grandfather, said: “The gift is accepted and it is for the upkeep of the baby especially her education.”

He said: “It is touching to see that women accountants are involved in this bold step,” just as he urged male accountants to borrow a leaf from SWAN Delta, adding that it is said that “what a man can do a woman can do better, but in this case, it is a situation of what a woman can do, the men should also do it.”

On her part, speaking to Oasis Magazine, mother of the child, Ejiro, thanked the body for all they have been doing for the Adaga family.

“It is not easy, but I know that God will give them the strength to do according to what they promised my daughter in Jesus name amen,” she said.
