ASUU Strike: Another Six Weeks Of Ruptured Academic Activities In Nigerian Universities

From Monday, 7th March, Adamu Adamu, the Minister of Education, will launch a committee to renegotiate the 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

Within six weeks following the inauguration, the committee is supposed to submit its report.

The 2009 deal has been a point of disagreement between the two sides

ASUU has accused the federal government of failing to follow some of the agreements struck on many occasions.

The government and ASUU agreed in 2009 that the working conditions of university teachers will be reviewed every five years.

The condition of service includes the issue of salaries and allowances of the lecturers.

However, the minister of education has formed a seven-member committee to investigate the arrangement.

According to Ben Goong, the ministry’s spokesman, the committee will be inaugurated on Monday.

“The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, will lead a team to renegotiate the Federal Government’s 2009 agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities,” Goong said.

The committee is due to provide its report in six weeks, according to Charles Akpan, a spokesman for the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

“The Ministry of Education’s renegotiation committee is anticipated to wrap up everything on the condition of service and submit its report in six weeks,” Akpan added.
