BREAKING! Strike: DELSU ASUU To Meet Next Week, As Mgt. Directs Students To Return To Campus For Lectures

The Management of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has directed students of the institution to return to campus immediately to commence lectures, saying that the approved academic calendar of the institution would be followed strictly.

Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, recently extended the ongoing nationwide strike by two months.

Arising from its 183rd regular meeting, held on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, after extensive deliberations on the approved DELSU academic calendar, the institution also decided that “all undergraduate and postgraduate students are to return to campus immediately and commence lectures; Faculties and departments should ensure that academic activities commence fully.”

In a statement in the university’s bulletin on Wednesday, the management added that “consequently, all students are expected to return to campus and commence academic activities with immediate effect.”

Meanwhile, Oasis Magazine learnt that ASUU-DELSU Congress has been scheduled for Wednesday, 23rd March, 2022.

Sources said the agenda for the said congress is ‘Senate Directive on Resumption.’

The congress scheduled to commence at 11am will hold at the 1000 Capacity Lecture Hall, Site 3.

A source at the said Senate meeting who spoke under conditions of anonymity, said that “normally when there is this kind of strike, there are exceptions.”

“So, the university is trying to plead that exception to ASUU so they can permit them because we have so many things to do. For example, this weekend we have the matriculation ceremony and next month we have DELSU@ 30 convocation, etc. So, on the basis of this, DELSU has written to ASUU and requested permission to allow us carry out these events.”

Also, a member of ASUU who spoke to us and did not want his name mentioned because he is not authorized to speak, said “the VC was in DELSU ASUU congress on Tuesday where he said they held a meeting with the governor who appealed that most of the issues causing the strike have already been handled by DELSU so they should be excluded and if there are other issues that involve the school, ASUU Chairman can engage the state government through the Ministry of Higher Education.”
