A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, Comrade Francis Obule (JP), has commended the Delta Central 2023 group (DC-23) for taking a bold decision to prune down the number of 2023 governorship aspirants to three to brighten the chances of Delta Central in the forthcoming PDP governorship primary.

Hon. Obule who spoke to newsmen in Warri said that the choice of Chief David Edevbe, Chief Kenneth Gbagi and Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for 2023 list of DC-23 was in order.

He noted that the advice from DC-23 was commendable, because some of the names of the aspirants cannot even win House of Assembly election, yet they want to contest for governor of the State, adding that Urhobos of Delta Central has a major challenge which is the Ijaw ethnic nationality with their boasting that they would buy over some Urhobo delegates at the primary to increase their chances of securing the ticket, to me that issue cannot be substantiated, though the delegates are looking for their daily bread, the pruning of aspirants to three persons remains very important to the chances of Delta Central, because we cannot afford to wait for 24 years before the governorship position rotate to Delta Central.

Comrade Obule noted that Ijaws have the right to contest, but the word ethnic nationality should not be used because Delta State PDP is not practicing ‘osusu’ system of zoning, stressing that it was based on senatorial district, therefore, the word ethnic nationality should be abolished.

“You will recall that during the late Isaac Ighovodja of SDP and Professor Eric Opia of NRC in 1991, the Urhobo nation through the UPU stepped in, then, there was no group like DC-23, UPF or Core Group, but UPU was able to manage the situation when it advised Chief Ighovodja to step down for Olorogun Felix Ibru based on popularity and financial muscle and Ighovodja accepted for the interest of Urhobo nation and Ibru defeated Prof. Opia at the polls. I am appealing to all aspirants from Delta Central to tow the line of late Chief Ighovodja so that Delta Central could secure the governorship position in 2023”.

Hon. Obule also advised all aspirants to hearken to the advice of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa that Delta Central should prune down the number of their aspirants, stressing that now that has been done, other aspirants should accept the decision of DC-23 by faith and cue behind the best among them.

“Those of you (aspirants) who declared their interest for the governorship position should try to work with the acceptable Delta Central candidate for tomorrow may be your turn,” he added.
