Activist Writes Okowa, Wants DTSG To Chase ‘Agberos’ Off Major Roads In Delta

Activist Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen has said that there is “the urgent need to set-up a welfare team to clampdown on touts/hoodlums from major roads and junctions” in Delta State.

Agberen said this in an open letter to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

According to the letter, there is the need to have a decent society, saying that “Delta State Government should inaugurate a welfare team and enforce laws to clampdown touts/hoodlums from her major roads and junctions as a result of the constant pains being inflicted on the people especially the road users on daily basis, as it is becoming alarming and worrisome.”

The letter dated 19th April, 2022, said that “the presence of touts, hoodlums/criminals also known as AGBERO on the major junctions and streets of Delta state, has promoted several crimes and violence across the state,” adding that “major junctions are points for pick pockets, snatching of phones and cars, armed robberies, kidnapping, extortions, illegal collection of taxes by unauthorized groups and other forms of social vices over the years.”

Furthermore, he opined that “these has painted Delta State and mostly Warri, Uvwie, Udu, Ughelli, Sapele and its environs to portray different names and meaning to different people.”

“His Excellency Sir, confirmed report has it that there is a group of individuals, impersonating and parading themselves as a task force operative. They currently constitute nuisance as they operate in tricycles, looking for victims to prey on. They have also been reported to be carrying out armed robbery, abduction and kidnapping. They take their victims to unknown destinations and demand huge ransoms from the victims’ families. Their presence is a threat to the peace and security of the aforementioned areas.

“Sir, the enigma behind the constant robbery, killings and kidnapping of victims from major junctions in Warri is a mystery we want to be unraveled. It is high time the Delta State Government look into this subject matter and focus their attention on bringing hoodlums and criminals also known as AGBERO, who impose themselves to be council or task force officials; extorting and maltreating the masses all in the names of union to face the laws,” the letter said.

He averred that as part of Governor Okowa’s agenda and commitment to finishing strong and building a ‘stronger’ Delta State, it is pertinent that he urgently constitutes a welfare union team in Delta State that should be mandated to clampdown all forms of intimidation, extortion, illegal taxation, cultism, thuggery and other social vices across the state who he said are “using the names of the local government council, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW),ticket sellers and others to frustrate hardworking Nigerians.”
