Professor Of Medicine, Abiodun Adewuya Emerges LASUCOM PROVOST

Professor of Public Mental Health in the Department of Behavioural Medicine, Professor Abiodun Adewuya has been elected the 8th Substansive Provost of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM).

A former Acting Provost of the College, Prof. Adewuya polled 88 votes to defeat Prof. Mobolaji Oludara who polled 40 votes in an election which held on Tuesday, 29th November, 2022.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, congratulated the former Acting Provost of the College on the well-deserved election.

She avers that Prof. Adewuya’s remarkable contributions to the celebrated trajectory of growth at the College over the years, and his standing as one of the most respected researchers in Nigeria puts him in good stead to successfully take the college to her next level of development. She also believes that the robust relationship he had built with relevant stakeholders during his stint as Acting Provost of the College would help him to hit the ground running.
She wishes him well on his new role.

About Professor Abiodun Adewuya

Professor Abiodun Adewuya is a Professor of Public Mental Health in the Department of Behavioural Medicine, Faculty of Clinical Sciences (FCS) LASUCOM, Ikeja. He had his basic medical education and clinical postgraduate training at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He is a fellow of the Faculty of Psychiatry of both the West African College of Physician (FWACP) and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCPsych). He had further postgraduate academic training and degrees from the University of Manchester, Kings College London, and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He was a Research Fellow at the Institute of Psychiatry (IOP) in London and was appointed Professor of Psychiatry in 2013.

In the University and College administrative experience, he has served as Head of Department (Acting & substantive) of the Department of Behavioural Medicine, served as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences (2014-2016), served as Director, LASU Directorate of Research and Academic Linkages (2017-2019) and served as a member of the Governing Council (2018-Date). He was appointed and served as the Acting Provost of the Lagos State University College of Medicine from 2020 – 2021.

Adewuya is also an Honourary Consultant Psychiatrist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). He served as a member of the LASUTH Governing Board and Head of the Committee that drafted the Lagos State Mental Health Law and the Lagos State Mental Health Policy. He is currently the Chairman of the Lagos State Mental Health Advisory Council and member of the Nigerian Mental Health Law advisory committee and the Committee to review the Nigerian Mental Health Policy.

His research interest includes public mental health and maternal mental health. He has led several research initiatives like the Lagos Mental Health Survey (LSMHS) and Lagos Schools Emotional and Behavioural Health Survey (LSEBHS). He is the Principal Investigator in the Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) funded Mental Health in Primary Care (MeHPriC) project. He is also the Executive Director of the Centre for Mental Health Research and Initiative (CEMHRI).

Abiodun Adewuya has had over 100 scientific publications in high-impact journals and according to the latest AD (Alper-Doger) Scientific ranking index, he has consistently ranked the No.1 researcher in LASU and number 21 researcher in Nigeria for the past 5 years.

In 2022, Professor Abiodun Adewuya was among four LASUCOM Professors who made the list of Top Scientists in Nigeria rated among the World’s Top 2% Scientists in the annual Stanford University publication.

In the past 10 years, he has attracted international research grants from Grand Challenges Canada (GCC), Medical Research Council (MRC), National Institute of Health (NIH) e.t.c totalling about 1.5 million dollars (over 1 billion Naira at today’s rate) to LASUCOM, out of which 10% is remitted to LASUCOM as “Management fees” and contributed over N100 million.to the LASUCOM purse as a researcher in the last 10 years.
