DELSU Co-operative Society Performs Groundbreaking Ceremony For Ultra-modern Hotel

The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of the Delta State University Cooperative ultra-modern hotel, held on Wednesday in Abraka.

Dignitaries present during the ground-breaking ceremony include Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Andy Egwunyenga represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Professor Ochuko Anomohanran; Registrar, Mrs. Rufina Ufiofio; Bursar, Mrs. Otimeyin Ekakitie-Omajuwa; University Librarian, Professor Stephen Uwaifo; Director of Co-operative Societies, Delta State, Mr. Chukudi Onyekpe; Assistant Director, Co-operative Societies, Delta State, Mr. Christian Ogor and Rev. (Dr.) Onoriode Ogheneroro.

Others are former presidents of the Co-operative, Sir Jacob Akpomie and Professor Godson Igborgbor.

Speaking during the event, Professor Egwunyenga said the hotel project is not the first to be embarked on by the leadership of the body, saying he is convinced that just the way previous projects were successful, building the ultra-modern guest house will also be efficiently executed.

He urged them to pay attention to the finishing of the building and ensure that the hotel competes with those in Abuja and Lagos.

While commending the administrations of Akpomie and Igborgbor for laying solid foundations, he thanked Chief Agbure for his giant strides, noting that the present president has done so much for the Co-operative.

It is important that the university community continues to cooperate with him, he added.

On his part, Mr. Onyekpe, noted that it is important for co-operative societies to start thinking of diversification.

While appreciating the Management Committee members for doing marvelously well in coming up with great ideas, he tasked them not to allow the project hinder the issuance of loans to members.

He went on to congratulate the executive and prayed for the speedy completion of the project.

Earlier, President of the Co-operative, Chief Edward Agbure, in his address said the building when completed shall comprise of single rooms, standard rooms, executive suites, family suites with two bedrooms and kitchenette, just as he hinted that it will also have a bar, kitchen, restaurant, laundry and a lounge with facilities for games and a conference hall.

He noted that the hotel will add to the aesthetic value of DELSU.

He recalled that while assuming office in 2018, he promised that his cardinal focus was to create wealth through multiple streams of income to the benefit of present and future workers of the university.

Agbure thanked the university management for providing land for the project billed to be completed in December.

He also applauded the support of Mr. Onyekpe and Mr. Ogor for supporting the Management Committee in its quest for diversification.

Chief Executive Officer, Stevuk Nigeria Limited, Stephen Ukrakpor, spoke to Oasis Magazine.
According to him, the architect did a marvelous work.

He revealed that the two-storey building hotel when completed will have 42 rooms.

Meanwhile, members of the body have called for the extension of the tenure of Agbure.

One of them who spoke to Oasis Magazine anonymously recalled that a similar situation occurred during the tenure of Akpomie who did very well then, saying it is a way of encouraging excellence.

Adding that the call to extend his tenure when it ends in December is in the overall interest of the Co-operative.
