PIA: Enogie Of Orogho Sends Policemen To Arrest Edevbie, As Iwevbo Community Reacts

After a tripartite meeting, with the Leaders of Ivwebo, Newcross Petroleum, and NUPRC, where it was agreed that the Newcross Petroleum should operate within the provisions of the law, which recognises the community and not Dukedom, the Enogie of Orogho today, 29th June 2023, hired the services of some police officers from Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Edo State Police Command to forcefully take away Mr Emmanuel Edevbie, the spokesman of Ivwebo Elders Representative from his School at Niger Delta University, Oghara in Delta State, Ivwebo Elders Council has said.

In a statement signed by Chief Felix Okotie, Secretary, Ivwebo Elders Council, said they gathered this development from
an eye witness.

The statement added: “We were told that it was when the students were shouting kidnappers! Kidnappers!! that people came and the armed men said they are police officers from Edo State, and that it is the Enogie of Orogho that asked them to arrest him to Benin.”

The statement said that “the Community and its leaders have been under serious attack by the Enogie ever since the implementation of the Petroleum Industrial Act. The Community once petitioned the Inspector General of Police who asked the Commissioner of Police, Edo State to investigate the matter. The Urhobos been a minority tribe in Edo State. The Edo State Police Command is not doing much to protect their lives and property, but, the interest of the Enogie as it’s seen today.”

Furthermore, the body called on the Inspector General of Police, to order the immediate and unconditional release of Mr Emmanuel Edevbie by the Edo State Police Command.

“The people of Ivwebo community are peaceful and we promise to continue to maintain the peace.

“We call on The Federal Government, Edo State government and Delta State government to finalise the boundary dispute in that area or give a clear definition for the Urhobos in that area as our people cannot be regarded as slaves in this modern day.”
