Indorama Company Offers Scholarship To Two DELSU Students

Indorama Eleme Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited, Rivers State, on Wednesday, presented the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira as scholarship awards to two students in the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Delta State University, Abraka.

The brief but colorful event held at Science Auditorium in Site 2.

The recipients, Onoyovwi Chioma Prosper and Israel Victoria Okechukwu were selected for the honour because of their brilliant academic performances that put them ahead in Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

Every year, Indorama offers scholarship awards to students in the Faculty of Agriculture across institutions of higher learning in Nigeria as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Speaking during the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga, expressed the university’s immense gratitude to the fertilizer company for the gesture, noting that by the action, the company has created trust and credibility in the Nigerian society.

He stated that for the mere fact that Indorama chose the university for this year’s scholarship awards underscores the quality of the institution’s academic activities.

He reiterated the importance of the scholarship, stressing that it will assist the recipients to continue with their academic activities.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor (Mrs) Rosemary N. Okoh, congratulated the recipients for their remarkable achievements, just as he disclosed that a 100 indigent students have been been selected for a scholarship award by the institution.

Adding that the list of the beneficiaries will soon be released.

Also, while speaking at the event, the representative of the fertilizer company, Mr. Tunji Ajiboye Opeyemi, the Regional Manager, noted that the fertilizer company was committed to the training of Nigerian farmers and students by giving them the correct knowledge and skills to excel in their trade and discipline, stressing that the company has offered scholarships to students from different universities in the country.

He encouraged the students not to feel downcast about studying Agriculture, rather they should be proud of their profession, adding that no nation can survive without food.

Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. (Mrs) Dicta Ogisi, in her opening speech commended the INDORAMA company for their corporate social responsibility and goodwill that was extended to the university and to the Faculty of Agriculture in particular.

She equally thanked the University management for their vision and commitment towards nurturing the students to become leaders of tomorrow in their different fields .

Meanwhile, she noted that before now, the faculty could not admit more than 45 students per session, saying that they hit the roof by admitting 500 students this academic session.

According to her, the faculty was at the verge of collapse, adding: “All thanks to the present Vice Chancellor, Professor Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga who restored the faculty.”

Speaking to Oasis Magazine, one of the awardees, Onyovwi Chioma Prosper, a 400 Level student of Agronomy, Soil Science to be precise, said the reason why she chose Agriculture was because she wants to be part of those who will take the sector to the next level.

She also said her horizon got broadened when she was admitted.

On her part, Israel Victoria Okwechukwu, also a 400l student of the said department, said it was her choice to study Agriculture and she did not give up because her family members were solidly behind her.

Dignitaries that graced the occasion include Prof. Mrs Rosemary Okoh, Deputy Vice Chancellor(Administration) who represented the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Andy O. Egwunyenga, Prof. Mrs. Dicta Ogisi, Dean of Agriculture, Prof. Ben Nwanne, Director, Ceremonials, Information and Public Relations, NAD Aboribo, DELSU Public Relations Officer and Dr John Avbunudiogba, Acting Dean of Pharmacy.

Others are Prof. Atonuje, Dean of Science, Prof. Frank Oroka, Head of Agronomy Department and Prof. Austin Atonuje.
