ASUU Gives Scholarships To 11 Indigent Students In DELSU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) chapter has given scholarships to indigent students with outstanding academic performance as part of efforts to reward diligence and hard work among students.

Chairman, ASUU DELSU, Prof. G. O Demaki, who spoke on Thursday during the event that held at the Dean of Education Conference Hall, Site III, said the Union remained committed to encouraging brilliant students to complete their education, ensuring equal and adequate educational opportunities to students in public universities.

He disclosed that the 2023 ASUU students scholarship awards were in two categories namely ASUU National award and ASSU DELSU branch award.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic), Prof. Ochuko Anomohanran, while commending ASUU for the gesture, said that the management is very pleased with the executive of the union, because ASUU contributed to the stability the university enjoys today.

Adding that there cannot be progress in DELSU if the ASUU team does not give full support to the Management team.

He also congratulated ASUU for the achievements witnessed in the institution.

He said: “The University is growing and we are proud of it. I salute this team of ASUU executives. I also appreciate ASUU for not just pursuing the interest of members but being sensitive to the plight of those around us, especially the students who we are here to serve. ASUU is always leading. Contrary to what some persons think that ASUU always makes noise, and makes frivolous demands, ASUU’s interest is the development of the educational system and that is what we see play out today, recognizing that the country is faced with lots of challenges and the students are not finding it easy therefore there is need to reach out to those who are indigent and who can be helped so that they can complete their education.”

“What else can be done?” he quizzed.

He called on well meaning Deltans to key into this vision of ASUU in extending support to our very bright students who if not supported will fall out of the system.

“The VC is pleased with ASUU for this exercise,” he said.

The beneficiaries are Owhonowho Susan Ogheneyerovwo, (#200,000)- Language and Linguistics; Patrick God’spower Oghenevwegba (#200,000) -Accounting; Obodo Ogheneyore., (#100,000) -Political Science; Lucky Emmanuel (#100,000)- Chemical Engineering; Ndidi Marvelous, (#100,000) -Agric Economics; Malechi Ogechi (#100,000)- Anatomy and Cell Biology; Ophori Victory (#100,000) -Guidance and Counselling; Malechi Ogechi (#100,000) – Anatomy and Cell Biology; Obodeh Israel Blessing (#100,000) -Pharmacy; Okonye Godsfavor, (#100,000) -Medical Laboratory Science; Blessing O. Ernest, (#100, 000) -Public Law and Akwumiefune Jacinta.

Speaking to Oasis Magazine, Ophori Victory, appreciated ASUU and all that made the project possible.

According to him, the ASUU scholarship given to them will lessen their financial burdens and also that of their parents and guardians.

On his part, Ndidi Marvelous, a 400 level student of Agricultural Economics, said he is really excited about the opportunity, saying his sponsors have not been finding it easy.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for me and I promise to make good use of it,” he said.

Others who spoke to Oasis Magazine, Jacinta, a 200 level student of Pharmacy and Queen in their separate interviews, said they were very excited.

Jacinta thanked ASUU chairman and other executive members for making it possible for students with one financial issue or the other to get some respite.
