By Agare Oghenerume
The foundation stone laying ceremony of the Delta State University Bursary Welfare Association Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd MULTIPURPOSE PLAZA/OFFICES took place on Friday at Site 3, Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka.
Dignitaries present during the ground-breaking ceremony include the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Andy Egwunyenga ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Professor Ochuko Anomohanran, Bursar, Mrs. Otimeyin Ekakitie-Omajuwa; Director of Physical Planning, Architect Mike Asiafa, President of the DELSU BWA MPCS Ltd, Comrade Peter Emoghene, FCA and other members of the Management Committee, Rev. Gabriel Esiere, among others.
Speaking during the event, Professor Egwunyenga said he was very delighted to witness the monumental event, saying it was a sign of growth.
According to him, a welfare group that is being controlled by the Bursary cannot do less than the feat achieved, noting that they have all the professionals.
He opined that when people who are not professionals run a co-operative, people just look at the paper and see how much their dividend is without knowing that the co-operative is dying.
He added that no place grows without sacrifices, just as he congratulated the BWA EXCO on the development.
Continuing, he assured them of continuous support, while praying that those who witnessed the ground breaking will also witness the completion of the projects.

Earlier, President of the Co-operative society, Comr. Emoghene Peter, FCA, in his address made reference to the question he asked members during the last AGM, asking: *Why do we say Cooperative! Development?”
He noted that during his 80’s, Nigeria was said to be a developing Nation and over 30 years after, Nigeria is still a developing country.
Arising from the above, he added that Ideas are borne out of quest to know more.
He quizzed: “But what is the use of Idea, if it’s not put into ACTION?”
He continued by asserting that Nigerians must make deliberate effort to develop the country.
Adding: “But this is what the Nigerian leaders have failed to do over the years.”
Comr. Emoghene who thanked the Vice Chancellor for his support, said the cooperative was formed 14 years ago.
Furthermore, he said that even though the project was approved in April 2023 during the AGM, they did not commence work immediately because of the welfare of members they have at heart.
He assured members that this project will not deprive the EXCO of giving loans/withdrawals to them.
Speaking during the event, Mrs. Otimeyin Ekakitie-Omajuwa; the University Bursary and a patron of BWA, thanked the President for the brief history of the cooperative.
She recalled how in the early days they wondered if the cooperative will survive when the only DWMPCS LTD then had grown, saying the pioneer patron, Late Sir Uche Ugoji assured them that when this cooperative comes up, the tendency of its survival is very sure.
While appreciating the Management Committee members for doing marvelously well in coming up with great ideas, she assured members that with Professional Accountants running the cooperative, their money is in SAFE HANDS.
“We have professionals managing the account,” stressing that they study the books to ensure that the managers are not going the wrong the way.
She thanked the executive for working outside the box and also appreciated the University Management for their support and prayed for the speedy completion of the project.
