A Critical Caution To Urhobos In Diaspora
It is really shameful that for an Urhobo gathering for merriment in diaspora, Urhobo people will be dancing to Igbo and Yoruba music.
Why would Urhobo people in diaspora be promoting Igbo and Yoruba culture in Urhobo social gatherings?
It is shameful that our Urhobo people in diaspora are ashame to promote their culture.
Agreed Africans, except Ethiopia were colonised by white people but I think it is time for our Urhobo people to realise that every tribe in Nigeria is proud to promote her culture.
“Who do Urhobo people sef?” If other tribes in Nigeria are promoting their culture why can’t Urhobo people promote our Urhobo culture? In all Yoruba and Igbo social gatherings they promote their cultures with pride.

Precisely on Saturday 20th July, 2024, I saw an online video of Urhobo Association Of Washington,DC (UAWDG) members in an Urhobo Annual Summer Picnic at Watkins Regional Park, 301 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro, Maryland, US dancing to Igbo and Yoruba music in an Urhobo gathering.
This is bad, bad and bad. We are born Urhobo and we remain Urhobo no matter how we are westernised. If other tribes are not ashame of speaking their languages and playing their tribe’s music, why are Urhobo people in diaspora shy to promote Urhobo culture like what other tribes in Nigeria do in foreign lands?
The other day I saw online Urhobo people in a similar Urhobo day party in Toronto Canada dancing to non-Urhobo music. Do we call this ‘open eye’ or deliberate ignorance?
‘I shame for una wen dey diaspora wen they play Igbo and Yoruba music for Urhobo social gatherings’
