NAFDAC Shuts Down Sokoto Bakery For Using Unfortified Sugar, Banned Bromate
By Halima Abdulkadiri
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down a bakery in Sokoto for using unfortified sugar and banned bromate in its products.
NAFDAC State Coordinator, Mr. Garba Adamu, informed reporters on Friday that the bakery was discovered during a special raid conducted by agency officials.
“We found that the bakery was using saccharine, an unregistered foreign sugar, as a sweetener along with banned bromate in their production process. The items were seized for destruction, and the bakery will remain closed until it complies with regulations and directives,” Adamu stated.
Adamu stressed that only fortified, registered sugar containing vitamin A and other micronutrients is allowed for sale and consumption in Nigeria.
“This is a Federal Government policy enforced by NAFDAC and other government agencies to ensure consumers receive maximum nutritional and health benefits from products,” he said.

During the enforcement operation, six other bakeries were also sanctioned for poor hygiene. Enforcement officers, led by Mr. Buhari Manzo, have ramped up routine inspections of bakeries across the state.
“Bakeries are monitored to ensure they do not use saccharine or other banned items as substitutes for fortified, regulated ingredients,” Adamu added.
He cautioned producers against using adulterated, counterfeit, unregistered, and expired items in their operations, reiterating that NAFDAC would continue its enforcement activities at all times.
Adamu mentioned that the operation would extend to local government areas as part of the agency’s efforts to ensure hygienic food and proper products are in circulation.
He urged the general public to avoid purchasing unregistered products and to report any suspicious practices or contaminations to NAFDAC, emphasizing the agency’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding public health.
