Nigeria’s House of Representatives Deputy Speaker, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, emphasized the importance of accountability, credibility, and transparency in the work of the ECOWAS Parliament’s Joint Committee, which he chairs. Kalu shared these views during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where the committee held a delocalised meeting.

As Chairman of the Joint Committee on Administration, Finance, Budget, Public Accounts, Macroeconomic Policy, and Economic Research, Kalu stated that the primary focus of the financial committees is to scrutinize the financial health of the ECOWAS Parliament.

He highlighted the need to enhance transparency, integrity, and accountability within the institution, which he described as evolving but in need of stronger structures in these areas.

Kalu stressed the importance of prioritizing integrity and transparency to build the parliament’s credibility, which he believes will attract more support for its initiatives. He also pointed out the need to identify and address gaps in the current systems that may undermine the parliament’s transparency, accountability, and credibility.

The committee, he noted, aims to develop resolutions that will strengthen these structures and ensure that the parliament operates at the highest standards of governance.
